Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate, the story that inspired the Movie Badlands: Directed by Terrence Malick

Badlands was loosely based on a series of murders by two young Americans. Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate killed Caril's family and a number of other people who had the misfortune to get in their way.

While the movie is in no way a documentary, many of the details are taken directly from the true story. The main changes were to make the two protagonists more interesting and to allow the film the space to depict a story rather than just a non-stop killing spree.

Over the years, the story has been covered in a number of true crime style books. Most of these are now out of print but there are a couple which are still available from if you want to find out more.
