Formula one, 2001 season Italian Grand Prix at Monza: Business and Politics: the jpoc report

The continuing row over the two month long winter testing ban rumbled on. This time, Toyota's intention to flout the ban was not the point at issue. The bosses of the larger teams were complaining that the test ban was actually set to increase their costs as they would spend heavily on computer simulation time in the closed season and then run two separate test teams as soon as the ban was ended.

As far as the Toyota situation went, F1 promotor Bernie Ecclestone said that the Japanese team must adhere to the testing ban as soon as they lodge their entry for the world championship. They do not have to do that until the fifteenth of November and so they could, in theory, test for the first two weeks in that month.

Indy circuit owner Tony George launched a bid to create a package deal for US tv that would bundle F1 races with his own IRL series. This was perhaps more of a bid to gain decent covereage for the IRL series than to do anything for F1. IRL spun off from Champ cars a few years earlier and it was not very popular. A TV deal with an F1/IRL package might get better coverage for the latter series than if it was on its own. He did succeed in getting a network deal for the US GP for 2002.
