Formula one, 2001 season United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis: Business and Politics: the jpoc report
Late September saw the Frankfurt motorshow and as usual, an opportunity for car company bosses to have some discrete meetings. On the Formula One front, this allowed the manufacturers sporting chiefs to continue their discussions about the launch of a new championship in which they would reap the rewards and exercise control.

The real motivation appeared to be the situation of Bernie Ecclestone. While he was in control, the manufacturers were happy to allow his setup to run the show and reap the benefit of his work to promote the sport. Looming though were the prospect of his retirement and the end of the current F1 commercial arrangements and, after that time, the car manufacturers were unhappy about the potential structure of the sport.

Nominations for the post of FIA president closed and there was only one candidate. Nobody emerged to challenge the encumbant, Max Mosley. Thus he was certain of being re-elected to serve a third term as president. That would be his last stint as the organisations rules limit a president to three terms.

The Mosley Ecclestone pairing was the biggest single factor in the emergence of Formula One as the worlds leading full time sporting event. Nothing bar the Olympic Games and Soccer World Cup came close to the popularity of F1 under the Ecclestone-Mosley regime and the prospect that the end of Mosley's final spell as FIA president would coincide with the end of Ecclestone's role as F1 promoter was real and would be a challenge for the sport.
