Formula one, 2001 season Hungarian Grand Prix at The Hungaroring: Prospects for the race: the jpoc report
The Hungaroring circuit has a low average speed and lots of slow corners. Many teams find it hard to predict the way that a race will develop and that puts a premium on tactical flexibility. That is why Michael Schumacher is the favourite to win this race.
McLaren benefit from a large fuel tank and lower consumption than Ferrari which should give them some extra options in the race but they will be hampered by the fact that their car is not quite so suited to slower corners.
Both of those teams use the Bridgestone tyres which are expected to outperform Michelin on the Hungarian track. The forcast is hot and sunny which should boost Michelin but that is unlikely to cancel out the advantage that Bridgestone have on this type of track.
BAR will be pleased with the weather forecast. Their cool running car will stand to benefit if others wilt in the heat. Jaguar expect that the circuit will suit their car and they cartainly must hope for a points finish.
A win for Michael Schumacher will clinch the championship though it is not really in doubt anyway. Coulthard needs a win combined with a poor result for Michael Schumacher. It's not likely.
Alesi and Frentzen will be as keen as mustard to impress in their new teams. Jean will have beating his team mate as his main target. Everyone expects that Frentzen will have the better of Burti in the second Prost so his main goal must be to be seen to mixing it with the Jordans, BARs and Suabers rather than with the Minardis. Both drivers were restricted to 50km of running in the cars because of the F1 summer break which has a strict testing limit. That means that they may struggle to get used to the cars. That is less likely to trouble the calm and patient Frentzen than the easily frustrated Alesi. Also, the advice of triple champion Alain Prost will be invaluable.
This may well be the last race for Tarso Marques. If not, he is only likely to race once more for Minardi and he has certainly not done enough to merit a place in another team.
