Formula one, 2001 season Hungarian Grand Prix at The Hungaroring: Politics and business: the jpoc report
The on off peace deal between the FIA, Bernie Ecclestone's F1 rights holders SLEC, the big car manufacturers who make the engines and the F1 team owners entered into an off phase. This time it was the team owners led by Frank Williams and Ron Dennis who were stirring the mix in a bid to secure a bigger slice of Ecclestone pie for the independent team owners.
Another row brewing could see the team owners pitted against the engine manufactures. This concerned engine power over the remaining years of the current technical agreements. With no changes scheduled for the engine regulations until 2007, the prospect of power outputs in the region of 950bhp was very real. For the teams, this raised safety concerns along with the fact that there was increasinly little scope for limiting speed by other means. The team owners would like an immediate cut in power, presumably by means of a reduction in engine size. The manufacturers did not want to disrupt engine development programmes that were already planned out over several years.
Both sides had a reasonable point of view. The team owners position was fairly clear to see. They wanted safer cars and they had few other options than a power reduction. From a manufacturers viewpoint, it was not just the money lost and disruption caused by a change in plans. Some car companies might opt out of F1 altogether if they became concerned that tens of millions of dollars of investment might be wasted. Their financial controllers could easily switch the budget to something with a more predictable return.
