Formula one, 2001 season Hungarian Grand Prix at The Hungaroring: Who drives what?: the jpoc report

Minardi announced that Malaysian hot shot Alex Yoong would drive for them in the 2002 season. He would bring several million dollars of sponshorship for Asian business interests which would be a big help to the team. When the announcement was made, he did not posess the FIA superlicence necessary for F1 competition. There was no reason to think that this would be a problem for the 2002 season but Minardi and Yoong were both keen to see him start to drive for the team in the 2001 season. That would depend on him getting the licence but the precedent ot Kimi Raikkonen who was give a provisional superlicence at the start of the 2001 season should have opened the way.

The aftermath of the Frentzen sacking continued to rumble on as the consequences for the 2002 season were digested. One possibility that was raised was for Jaguar to ditch de la Rosa for the German. Unlike the rumours of Button or Hakkinen moving to the leaping cat, a Frentzen move would play well with Jaguar's ambitions in the German market. The prospect of an unsettled Trulli swapping seats with Fisichella at Benetton also seemed to become more likely. It looked even more likely when it emerged that, just before the Hungarian race, Renault had allowed their option on Giancarlo Fisichella to lapse and Jordan had offered him a three year contract.

The identity of Jordan's other driver in 2002 was really up in the air. A lot depended on the result of their deal to sign Alesi for the rest of the 2001 season. If Jean did the business then he would be a near certainty for 2002. That was a very big if though.

The prospect of Frentzen staying at his new home with the Prost team looked less likely. Surely, if he did well there, there would be better offers on the table for him?

Over at Arrows, Verstappen, who was already signed for 2002, was busy putting the knife into Bernoldi his 2001 team mate. We were left wondering what was the cause for the clearly high degree of personal animosity.
