Formula one, 2001 season German Grand Prix at Hockenheim: Circuit news and developments. the jpoc report
Sit Jackie Stewart used the opportunity of the Silverstone race to lobby the British government over the future of the circuit used for the British Grand Prix. His goal was to obtain funding to assist in the circuit's development programme. The official line was that the money was already in place to build the cake and that government was being asked to help by finding the cost of the icing. Or something. Of course, nobody was going to say no to Sir Jackie under the glare of the media publicity but in the light of the mess over the Millenium Dome and the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium, the British Government had little appetite for big spending on public attractions.
Bahrain started to court Bernie in a bid to win an F1 Grand Prix in the near future. While not all such bids materialise into a race, or even a circuit on which to hold one, it cannot have made the tracks hosting the assorted European races feel secure. No doubt, that is no bad thing for Ecclestone as he can get better deals from the circuits if they are sufficiently nervous.
Hockenheim had something to celebrate in the run up to the German Grand Prix. They agreed an extension to their current race deal that would run up until the 2008 race. This would see the race running at the revised track from 2002. The track revisions replace the long high speed run through the forest with a shorter section linking the exit from and entry to the stadium section.
