Formula one, 2001 season Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring: Off track developments the jpoc guide
The main news in the run up to the Austrian race was that the proposed Russian GP in Moscow has been given the green light. Hmmm, have any of the GP movers and shakers seen Russian driving? jpoc has and it makes Brussels commuters look like human beings. Scary.
If Moscow does get a race, most likely from 2003 onwards, the question will be: which existing race will be for the chop? It seems certain that there will not be an additional race so something will have to give. It looks hard for Italy, Germany and France to justify two Grands Prix so one of those is the most likely to go. The San Marino GP at Imola is the most vulnerable because its contract to run the race has just expired and, if Italy has to lose a race, it would be better to see that one go than Monza which is such an historic venue for motorsport.
The year's missing man team, Toyota parted company with their technical boss Frenchman Andre de Cortanze. It was all "no comment" and "mututal agreement" as to why. The Japanese manufacturer then added to their line up by recruiting Minardi designer Gustav Brunner to be head of design. This does not sound like a one for one replacement but at least they put somebody at the helm for technical decisions. Meanwhile, Minardi protested that they had Brunner under contract for another year and a half and threatened legal moves though Toyota challenged this and basically said that Minardi had nothing that would stand up in court.
As the teams were preparing for raceday in Austria, the news broke that Paul Morgan, co founder, with Mario Illien, of Ilmor had been killed in an aeroplane crash. Sad news.
